Welcome to the Bookish Nectar Blog!

Hello & Welcome to the Bookish Nectar blog!

I am eager to create a space to share updates on a monthly basis about my journey understanding literacy and how engaging with books helps me to become the type of person I want to be.  This blog is one small part of a larger dream to be a support for other writers and readers, be they adults or children, teachers or students.

Why is reading cool? What a relief to my fellow book nerds! For years, I was the misfit in my family and friend group. I absolutely loved reading. As I grew older, my time filled up with class work and extracurriculars. I think I read avidly up until 7th grade. In 7th grade, I read a couple of key books to my personal development, Seabiscuit, and I was also reading Harry Potter. I was passionate about both of these. I also read my first really bad word during this time, quietly tucked away in my room with one of these books.

But things changed after that year. Suddenly, it wasn't cool to read. It wasn't cool to be smart. I don't know why I thought or felt these things. As I type them now with my fully formed adult brain, I think -- who wouldn't want to be smart? And we know that reading makes us smarter along with a bajillion other benefits (to mention how it helps calm our nervous systems in a mere 6 minutes seems especially significant at the present!).

Thank goodness for the full circle development. As I scroll through my facebook on New Years Eve and New Years Day, my eyes meet the very happy new trend: reading is cool again! There are so many people posting their reads from the past year, their hits and misses in the literary world, and my nerd brain loves it! I look at every single book cover from each person's posts, learning what kind of books they enjoy, and, of course, also noting books to add to my enormous and ever-growing TBR pile!

That passion is what drives this blog: my own journey, including the segment of not reading, and my enthusiasm for what I'm reading, what my kids are reading, and just generally talking with others about what they're reading and writing. I hope this becomes a welcoming community where we can share the power of storytelling. From the title of the blog, you can see that I perceive books as a sweet honey "nectar," good for the soul!

Thank you for reading this & welcome!
